Mon. 1-23-17

Today you will be practicing genetics using dragons.

1. Find the tab (scroll down to it) that says "PLAY AS GUEST" under the head GENIVERSE
at this website   https://concord.org/teaching-genetics/dragons

2.  Work through the challenges to practice your understanding of genetics.  (You should at Training and only move up to Apprentice, Journeyman, or Master if you can successfully complete the previous one.)

IF YOU NEED MORE HELP BECAUSE YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND IT >>>>>>>>>

This Khan Academy site will take you through any of the topics that you need help with.  Just click the tab on the right for the subject that you need help with.

Review for Gene regulation quiz

1.     What is gene regulation?

2.     How does gene regulation work?

3.     What is the lac operon? What does it make?

4.     What does the repressor do? How?

5.     Can lactase breakdown other sugars?

6.     What is TATA box?

7.     How is gene regulation different in prokaryotes vs. eukaryotes?

8.     What is cell specialization and how does it related to gene regulation?

9.     Define transcription factors.

10.  What are HOX genes?  Give 2 examples of what they might control.

11.  T/F  HOX genes are similar in all living things.

(Thurs. SNOW DAY) Firday 1-13-17

2.  Do the worksheet packet (questions from the reading)

3.  If time, create a model of gene regulation

hwk: finish packet

Wed. 1-11-17

2. Test (protein synthesis)

hwk: none

Tuesday, January 10, 2017

Tues 1-10-17

1. Short answer part of test

2.  Notes (handout was given yesterday)

3.  test review WS

Key:

RNA
DNA
Single stranded
Double stranded
Has ribose
Has deoxyribose
Has uracil
Has thymine
3 types
1 type

2.  messenger RNA – carries the instructions from the nucleus to the rivosome

3.  ribosomal RNA – makes up the ribosome

4.  transfer RNA – carries the amino acids and drops them off at the right spot (in the growing chain)

5.  Transcription uses DNA as a template to make mRNA, nucleus

6.  A codon is 3 bases (or nucleotides) in mRNA.

7. The mRNA code is read 1 codon at a time, and only in one direction (beginning to end).

8.  Translation is changing from the language of mRNA to protein (the amino acids in the correct order).

9. An anti-codon is part of the tRNA and it bonds with cododn (base pairing) thus bringing in the proper amino acid.

10.  mRNA carries the instructions from nucleus to ribosome (TRANSCRIPTION), rRNA makes up the ribosome, tRNA transfers the aminon acids (TRANSLATION).

OTHER SIDE:
1.     Griffith – transformation (harmless bacteria changed into deadly bacteria)
a.     Avery – process of elimination, N.A. is the genetic molecule
b.     Hershey/Chase – verification that DNA is genetic moleuclue (virus infecting a bacterium)
2.     DNA
3.     It can be copied, read, and used
4.     A monomer of a nucleic acid (5-C sugar, phosphate group, base)
5.     A-T  and C-G
6.     The DNA unzips, the matching base pairs line up on both sides in opposite directions. You end with 2 double strands – each has a new strand and an original strand
7.     Aatttgcat
8.     An abnormality/error in the DNA
9.     Neutral (not harmful nor beneficial)

Monday, January 9, 2017
